Keep Your Tipi Dry and Cozy with Our Rain Sheets and Pole Cap Cones

Don’t let a little rain dampen your tipi experience! Our rain sheets and pole cap cones are designed to keep your tipi interior dry and comfortable, even during heavy downpours.

Benefits of Rain Sheets:

The internal rain sheet ties to the lifter pole and then is bought forward towards the front of the tipi to catch any rain that may enter through the open smoke flaps.

Particularly useful in heavy down pours or when its raining and you have a fire going, necessitating the opening of the smoke flaps to let the smoke out.

The mainsheet does not interfere with the removal of smoke from the tipi.

The rainsheet tail can either exit the tipi through the opening at the bottom of the smoke flaps, or at the bottom of the lace pin panel above the door.

Our Rain Sheet and Pole Cap Cone Options:

Our rainsheets are designed to be as minimalistic as possible without compromising the area of coverage needed. They are internal and easily swung away if required, to tuck behind the lifter pole. still in place to be swung into action if needed. – please remove standard and partial options-.

The pole cap cone is a 1.3 m cone with a three m diameter designed to fit over a shortened crows nest.

This cone eliminates the inevitable flow of water down the poles into the tipi space. It also protects the poles from the elements, increasing their lifespan. Particularly with bamboo poles. We recommend the pole cap cone in areas of high rainfall and prolonged periods of wet weather. We have seen poles rot where the tripod rope lashes the poles together as the closeness of the poles and rope together maintains moisture and can lead to wet rot. In Dryer climates the pole cap cone may not be as necessary, enabling you to enjoy the extended poles and the graceful look created by the pole tips reaching towards the heavens.

In this case , drippers (either a rubber tongue taped to the pole, or, better a bead of silicon around the under side of the pole to interrupt the passing of the water, or both!) can be attached to the poles inside the tipi, just below the crows nest and above the mainsheet to direct water off the poles and onto the mainsheet, before it gets past the mainsheet and into the tipi space.

Traditionally, water was allowed to run down the pole all the way to the ground. This is ok, though inevitably, there will be drips until the water has made a ‘wet track’ down the underside of the pole that it can travel along.the poles must be ever so smooth and preferably lacquered to allow easy flow. Care must be taken to lift the liner rope off the inside of the pole to stop the water saturating the liner.

It is possible, though fiddly, and through experience, drips are inevitable now and then.

Rainfall washtub such an issue historically on the great plains, and the rain Gods were prayed to and thanked, whenever the heavans opened to replenish the plains and bring the buffalo.
